Composite is a construction company founded, managed and staffed by architects.

Composite was started in 2010 as a response to a difficulty in finding quality construction collaborators for smaller projects. Beginning with more manageable small, but intricate projects, the company has steadily increased capabilities and developed trade relationships that allow it to work on larger, more complex projects with a level of efficiency and precision that exceeds initial expectations.

Much of the work – being in New York City – is concerned with adapting existing spaces and renovating or restoring historic structures. The research and technical demands required by technically sensitive conservation work has led Composite to become an essential collaborative resource for GGA.  Projects are realizing a high level of construction quality and preservation of design intent and staff is enriched by the exposure to the process of turning investigation and documentation into built work.

Life Edited I

Soho, NY

Completion date: June 2012

Construction cost: $450,000
LE1 is the prototype for an extremely small, highly functional, transformable line of apartments that are being developed as models for sustainable living. Conceptually, less space uses less material, less energy and unburdens the user with the requirement to fill multiple rooms that are only used part of the time. Everything is designed with a purpose - typically more than one - and all furniture is built into the walls and either folds or slides out to convert from, say a couch to a queen bed. All materials, finishes, fixtures andappliances are high performance, green certified and highly efficient.
The Life Edited Project won an AIA award in 2013.

This Tribeca triplex is a unique private residence that includes extensive front, rear and roof terraces atop a six story building in the shadow of Freedom Tower. Large basalt stone has been installed at all floor surfaces in an open plan broken up by a 15’ wide by 10’ high limestone fire place. Extensive custom millwork in old growth douglas fir veneers create a colorful contrast to the dark stone flooring. An open tread stairway connects all three floors against the spine of an exposed brick wall. The walnut and blackened steel staircase is enclosed in clear glass on polished steel standoffs.

8 Jane Street

New York, NY, USA

Completion date: May 2013

Construction cost: $1.8 million
Located in the heart of the West Village, this three unit townhouse from the late 1800’s received a full renovation. The interior was fully gutted and reframed. The original crawlspace cellar was excavated and underpinned to create a recreation room and 9’-0”ceilings. The roof was demolished and raised to provide lofty ceilings at the third floor; the new roof, now accessible from a stair boasts a private roof terrace. Extensive excavation was done to the exterior yard. A bluestone terrace was created with perimeter ipe benches and lush landscaping. The landmarked street elevation was carefully restored to its original glory, while the rear façade was reconstructed to include wide expanses of glass.

New York, NY, USA

Commencement date: August 2013

Construction cost: $4 million
With views of Washington Square Park, this West Village townhouse will receive a full gut renovation and rear addition. Three duplex units will receive terraces and a newly renovated rear yard plaza. The addition of an elevator, while presenting design challenges for a twenty foot wide townhouse, fits perfectly within the stair hall and makes the five floor walkup a thing of the past. Three large units will include multiple full and half baths and large scale kitchens; each unit includes three bedrooms. Extensive pre-construction work has been done for this project to expedite construction durations and sequencing. Intense collaboration with Guerin Glass Architects and interior designer Robert Stillin was done throughout the bidding process.
