Nestled into the canyons above Los Angeles, this design seeks to capitalize on the expansive views of the city below and the sea beyond. Integrated into the landscape, strategic retaining walls expand the site and carve out terraces for the house, pool, and outdoor terraces.
A simple palette of materials is employed to allow the building to respond contextually to the site as well as the cultural environment of southern California. Sheltered from the approach, the house opens up toward the city below and the ocean beyond. Programmatic requirements informed the design through the requirement for adjacencies and separations. Separate zones are created for public formal functions, family living, sleeping, and service.
