This gut renovation seeks to transform segmented spaces into an open and light-filled loft residence where the public areas of the home flow seamlessly together. This project re-imagines a disjointed Manhattan loft by connecting and maximizing open living spaces for a single-family residence. The original floor plan consisted of rooms totally separate from each other. Our new layout creates a seamless flow between the entry, living and dining spaces, which are now separated only by various millwork elements. Steel ornamental gates and a fixed screen enclose the elevator entrance hall from the rest of the unit but allow light from the street windows into the previously dark kitchen. The gates were custom fabricated to reference the lattice-like patterns of Indian Jali screens, providing a striking and memorable entry to the home.
