Transforming a historic miner’s cabin into a minimalist mountain retreat, this adaptive reuse project brings together old and new to create a uniquely site-sensitive home at the intersection of Aspen’s industrial downtown and the adjacent residential neighborhood.
Our work began with the careful restoration of a historic Victorian home built by one of the original claimholders to Aspen Mountain. This intricate cabin is expanded through a below-grade renovation and minimalist, two-story addition. While the historic structure is a highly articulated Victorian jewel, the new volume stands in contrast. It is intentionally quiet and darker color than the existing house, visually playing a supporting role to the delicate details of the restored structure. Additionally, the scale of the new structure enables an organic transition from Aspen’s multi-storied downtown core to a residential scale.
