This project takes inspiration from the simplicity of informal, coastal dwellings—like the hastily crafted beach shack—while embedding dramatic features that play with light and shadow.
The home is composed of two primary elements: an interior volume and a protective skin that are slipped past one another. The intense sunlight of the site plays across the theatrical scrim of the screen, creating dramatic shadows during the day. At night these weathered jewels give off the soft glow of private sanctuaries dotting the coast.
Smaller, protected stucco masses fit snuggly under the protective screen to create intimate and private spaces within the house. These solid masses create an interstitial void, which defines the home’s central common area. The open public spaces blur the line between indoor and outdoor living with extensive floor-to-ceiling windows. The resulting light-filled rooms and adjacent outdoor spaces create access to the inherent beauty of the site—a combination of sun, shadows, sea, sand and mountains—but helpfully temper the elements with a louvred teak screen.
