Town Lane House

Location: Amagansett, New York
Program: Residential
Size: 5,000 SF
Status: Completed 2017

Located along a quite stretch of farmland on the eastern tip of Long Island, our design takes advantage of the site's natural topography, tucking the house into a natural fold in the landscape. This location enables the home’s three distinct levels while keeping the structure close to the ground. Approaching the residence, visitors are met by a reserved and stately front. High hedges and an austere courtyard quietly lead visitors to the house itself. In contrast, once inside, the home is light-filled, open and airy, framing expansive views of the gentle landscape toward the back.

In plan, the home is organized as a twelve-foot structural module, which undergirds the program’s spatial sequencing: a wing of bedrooms to the right, a guest suite upstairs and public spaces—the kitchen, dining and living rooms—to the left. While rigorous in configuration, the arrangement allows the communal spaces to truly flow between one another.

Drawing conceptual and material inspiration from modernist projects of Fire Island and the vernacular sensibilities of historical Hampton homes, the project seeks to reinterpret these notions into a new and expressive form. A mix of cypress and cedar—which frame the windows, clad the walls and grace the ceilings—give color and texture to every room. Bluestone flooring span across the public areas of the house, as well as various outdoor patios—creating a seamless experience between indoors and out.
